URBAN DETRITUS: the weathered paintings of Chris Gibson

May 24 – June 11, 2010

Chris Gibson is a young artist living in Reno, Nevada. Through his work, he hopes people will see ascetic beauty of basic geometric forms contrasting alongside organic, flowing colors. His work parallels the human desire to modernize and construct on top of nature. He also hopes that through his work people will learn to see beauty in everyday objects and detritus. He sees his paintings as living, breathing creatures that change over time and are never truly finished; you (the viewer) only see it at a certain stage of its life. His experimental process of painting reflects this, as it’s a push and pulls technique. He may put a little paint on in some areas, and then he’ll scrub it off later.  Gibson has displayed works in Nevada, New York City, and Washington DC. He has displayed at the Nevada Museum of art in Reno Nevada, the prestigious Westwood galley in New York City, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson department of education building in Washington DC.

“LAID BARE: Cycling the Pacific Coast”

April 28 – May 14, 2010

In the Summer of 2009, Nate Clark set out with eight individuals to bike from Bellingham, Wash., to San Diego, Calif. As the American road trip quickly becomes a relic they saw an alternative in bike travel, and have attempted to update the traditional American vacation. Their expedition was an ecologically friendly way to experience the Pacific Coast, traveling exclusively along highway 101 and highway 1. Taking inspiration from Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, they rode with few plans and goals, enjoying the people they met and experiencing the places they stayed. The cycling community is a tight knit one, and the people they encountered along the way were kind, genuine and fascinated by what they were doing. Clark’s project was to document their progress, illustrating the historic beauty of the West Coast while examining each of the individuals who traveled with him.
