However dead and uninspiring your city may feel at times, let’s be glad it’s not Japan’s Gunkanjima Island. Gunkanjima translates to “Battleship,” named so because the island resembles a battleship when viewed from the sea.

The tale of this island is a spooky one. Inhabited from 1887-1974 as a coal mining facility, the island had one of the highest population densities ever recorded (still to this day). In 1974 the coal mine shut down and everyone fled. Now it’s a ghost island, full of menacing cement buildings and creepy decay–it has the appearance of the end of the world.

Not sure why I felt compelled to post this, but thought some of you might be as curious about this place as I was. Here are some photos:
