Sunland Series – Revisiting “Proud”

Sunland Series – Revisiting “Proud”

On June 19th, 2019 The Holland Project hosted Proud a discussion around histories in art, music, and activism in queer life. Our panel included Emily Hobson, author of Lavender & Red and current faculty in History and Gender, Race, and Identity programs at UNR; Jamal Barghouti, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Outreach Manager at Blackbird; Louis Niebur, Music History and Musicology at UNR; and Lydia Huerta, Gender, Race, Identity at UNR and co-chair of the Board of Directors for the Sylvia Rivera Center for Social Justice.

The panel presented on queer community and activism from early protests in the Bay Area, to Drag Queen culture in the Middle East, Gay Rodeo and Drag Court traditions in Nevada, and current day activities of the Sylvia River Center right here in Reno. Big thanks to KWNK 97.7FM Community Radio for recording the entire conversation which is linked here. Each panelist also prepared images and media for the event. We linked the PDF here so you may follow along to the recording.
