Girls Rock Reno

Girls Rock Reno is a week-long music instruction and performance summer camp for young people from ages 9-17. Campers will attend daily instrument lessons, write an original song with a band formed at camp, and perform in a showcase at the end of the week. We prioritize self-confidence, creativity, and community — encouraging campers to acquire skills to help guide them throughout their lives. Girls Rock Reno hopes to counter the underrepresentation of women and people of marginalized gender identities in music, and we are committed to creating a positive, inclusive environment. We welcome self-identified girls, trans, and non-binary youth to apply. 2019 applications are closed for camp occurring June 17-21, 2019.

GRR STRUCTURE:

Instrument & Vocal Instruction – Every day, campers attend two hours of group instruction on their assigned instrument. Our instructors are pulled from the dedicated and talented music community that has grown at the Holland Project over the past 10+ years. Campers work with musicians of diverse musical backgrounds, from opera to singer-songwriter to punk.

Band Practices – Campers work collaboratively with their bandmates to write an original song to perform at the GRR Showcase at the end of the week.  Bands practice daily with the help of their “band managers,” who provide guidance, encouragement, and technical support.

Workshops – GRR isn’t just about Rock – throughout the week, campers participate in workshops taught by community members to engage and empower them with both hands-on and critical-thinking skills.  Workshops include silk-screening band shirts at Laika Press, lyric composition, recording a clip for KWNK radio, and learning about the history of women in music.

Lunchtime Performances – At lunch, GRR invites a band or performer (some local, some from out of town) to play for campers and discuss their experiences.  List of artists TBA.

Showcase Finale – At the end of the week, each band will perform their original song for friends, family, and anyone who wants to see some awesome kids rock the house! This event is free and open to the public.
