Since we Renoites live in the very place where the first pair of Levi’s was ever made, I thought this would be of interest to some of us. The reason I know Reno was the birthplace of what would become an amazing pants phenomenon you ask? Because someone, in the very early days of Holland–before we had a name, suggested we call Holland “No. 7 Duck” after the name and color of the canvas used to make the jeans.

It wasn’t long before hot shot San Francisco dude (Mr. Levi Strauss) knew a good thing when he saw it and secured the patent for Reno man Jacob Davis, who was worried that other people were stealing his design. The two men partnered, and Davis eventually left Reno for San Francisco and managed production from 1873 (when the patent was accepted) until his death in 1908.

PS. Me and the person that suggested the name remain the only people who voted for the name No. 7 Duck, and it was ousted in the first round. My dad really liked this name too, but he didn’t get a vote.
